Help Me Heal

Each week BFK takes in dogs that need extra medical care or who, without surgery, would be put to sleep. These pups are in loving foster homes where they are recovering. If you care to support us with a one-time donation or would like to sponsor a pup during its recovery, know that your contribution will help these little ones to once again be whole.

Little Zoe is an amazing pup who is also nothing short of a miracle. She was born with a hole in her heart that did not seal – so she has spent three years with labored breathing and lung-related issues.

Zoe was ‘dropped’ (we call it dumped) at a shelter in Los Angeles. Shelter staff reached out to BFK and asked if we could help her. At that point the shelter did not apparently know that Zoe was also pregnant! That was discovered when she was evaluated by Dr. Zimmerman, the veterinary cardiologist. (There are only six of them in Southern Cal.)

Zoe spent ten days at Stonecreek Animal Hospital gaining strength and preparing for her puppies’ arrival. No one knew if Zoe could carry her puppies to term – or even survive giving birth. Foster Mom BJ was there for Zoe and the puppies and helped to make this all possible.

This little miracle girl did all that – and nursed them lovingly and attentively until this past week. Zoe’s puppies have all been weaned and are thriving. Then it was her turn to be cared for and made whole.

Zoe’s surgery was done at Access Specialty Animal Hospital in Culver City by Dr. Zimmerman. The estimated cost of the surgery is $5000. The final cost will be determined based on what medications etc. she needs during and after surgery.

BFK is committed to this sweetheart and has been since we rescued her. We are so very grateful that Zoe has been able to carry and deliver six healthy puppies!

If you would like to donate either to BFK or directly to the hospital, we would be very grateful. (Email marti@bichonfurkids.org if you want to make the donation to the hospital.)

Zoe has healed and is expected to live a full and complete “normal” life. She has been adopted and is happy in her forever home.

There are many FurKids like Zoe who come into BFK rescue needing extensive medical care and rehabilitation before they can lead a normal, healthy life.
